The park is named in honor of the indigenous people of the Maasai community. Masai Mara National Park occupies an area of 580 square miles. It represents the northernmost section of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. The Mara River, Sand River, and Talek River are the premier rivers draining waters of the park. The Masai Mara is famous for its variety of larger plains species inclusive of predators. The key wildlife species that might be seen in the Masai Mara include hippo, giraffe, waterbuck, warthog, eland, reedbuck, roan antelope, baboon, crocodile, topi, gazelle, zebra, monkeys, and black rhino.
